I'm so excited that this is happening.
It's a step in the right direction for Salmon.

Gina and Denise and company:
great idea, let's have action - start small, publicize and become part of everyday life. My mother lives in Southern Florida and she regularly recycles with curbside - without ever thinking about it and she's in her 80's, what's your excuse?

Thanks for the blog - it works and looks great and doesn't waste paper! thanks for the meeting and the coordination.

I thought the meeting was great start. A room full of enthusiastic people!!

I've been thinking of ideas for the 1st attempt at community awareness which I believe would be a newspaper article. What is our official name?

It looks as though it is "Salmon, Idaho Recycles". I like the name, but wanted to get confirmation that it was "the" name.

Ok, gotta go to work now, I'll be back "blogging" again. Good job Denise in setting all this up. Thank you.

Wow, this is a treat. I've never blogged before. When I first moved to Salmon I wondered...how am I going to live in a town without recycling. Well, I kept hauling it all to Bozeman, Missoula, or Boise. I'm glad to see we're comming together to make this effort! And...I was impressed with the group of folks who attended the meeting...background, skills, and can-do attitudes. It's exciting to be a participant. Thanks to all who attended the meeting. Great job to all who set up the blog.

How exciting this all is. I used to have curbside recycling in the mid '70's in Moscow, Id so it's not a new concept. We just have to change some view points which I think is possible. Beginning small can become big. Clothe grocery bags is a great start. I already gave one to a friend for her bday, pass one on to all your friends.

Sorry I was out of town for the first meeting. Sounds like you have a great beginning. Plan to make the next meeting. Know we can make this happen in good 'ole Salmon!

Fantastic! I am super excited that efforts are being made to bring a recycling program back to Salmon. Before you even get to the point of recycling one needs to make a commitment to reducing the waste they bring into their households in the first place. Educational outreach on the importance of why we need to reduce, reuse and recycle and how to do it may help in gaining community support for a “sustainable” recycling program in Salmon. I think this type of education is often overlooked and not often emphasized. Surprisingly there are a lot of people out there that don’t have much knowledge on the 3 r’s. I would suggest starting with educational outreach especially to our youth. At some point it would be great if some type of presentation could be developed for the local schools. It’s amazing how much kids can influence and reenergize their elders into action!

My sister in Connecticut designs the garden layouts at 2 Golf clubs/country clubs and several privat estates. She is wondering if anyone knows what to do with the hundreds of plastic pots that the nursery stock comes in....here is her question:

"let me know if you find any recycling options for plastic plant
containers. Most of the ones I get (numbering in the THOUSANDS with the golf courses I consult at) are numbered "5" or "6". I did some research and found that the local recycling centers do not reuse this type plastic. I guess they have been recycled already and are not as viable. But I really hate the idea of them ending up in land-fills. Some of the nurseries around here will take minimal quantities of containers back, but it is not cost
effective for them. In order to insure no plant pathogens will infect new plants they have to sterilize the containers in order to reuse them . I am trying to think of alternative uses for them, but have not come up with
anything yet. Any ideas? It is a crazy amount of waste in an industry which otherwise is trying to beautify the world, not destroy it."

I was thinking she could try some smaller nurseries, but I don't think it's worth her time to drive all over the north east trying to give away a few containers here and there.

Any ideas from the group?

Thanks, Gail

Denise and I are making headway on the first newspaper article which will (hopefully) appear in next Thursday's Recorder Herald and will coincide with National Recyle Day!! YEA!!

I have the notes from the other nights meeting with Jack, plus I am trying to contact him about some questions I have regarding steel cans, white paper, motor oil and etc. We are playing phone tag.

I will send a draft to Amy, Rab and Linda when I get to that point and would appreciate your review. The deadline to the paper is Tuesday at noon.

Thanks, Gail
